Letter to my Father about our Cuban Cousins is about the search for my long-lost Jewish family members. They were Ottoman Jewish immigrants who originally left Silivri, a small town in Thracia, at the very beginning of the 20th century and embarked on a second journey from İstanbul to Havana, Cuba in 1923, when the Ottoman Empire dissolved, and the Turkish Republic was born. Their most valuable possession was their native language of Judeo- Spanish that survived for 450 years in the Ottoman lands.

Roz Kohen
Roz Kohen es nasida i kresida en Estambol. Eya estudio en la Eskola Djudia de Estambol, Bene Berit (B'nai B'rith) i en el Kolej Amerikano para İjas (Robert College) en Arnavutköy. Roz bive en los Estados Unidos desde 1981. Su edukasyon mas resiente es sovre la siensia de biblioteka. Al presente Roz Kohen es enkarga de una sukursal de la biblioteka publika de St. Louis, Missouri.
Roz Kohen was born and raised in İstanbul, Turkey. She attended the Jewish Lycée, Bene Berit (B’nai B’rith) in the Galata region and graduated from the American College for Girls - Arnavutköy. She has lived in the United States since 1981. Her most recent degree is in Information Technology-MLS, Masters in Library Science.She worked 14 years as manager of one of St. Louis County Library branches in St. Louis, Missouri. She retired June 30th 2018.

Konstantinopol Djudyo retrata la vida Djudia durante la epoka de transformasyon del Imperio Otomano a la moderna Republika de Turkiya. La ovra representa las doz generasyones anteriores de Estambol Djudyo. Las konsejas semi biografikas son sovre los antepasados Kohen, Benshoam, Levi i Romano. El livro inkluye fotografias de los arshivos de la famiya Kohen. Eyos fueron las ultimas jenerasyones ke bivyeron avlando Djudeo-Espanyol. Pudyeron preservar suz lengua maternala asta ke los trokamyentos provokados por las dos Gerras Mundialas trusheron fin a suz esforsoz. Kon suz konsejas pasyonadas de los evenimyentos de la jenerasyon de sus padres i el uso de proverbios en Djudeo-Espanyol, alkansaron a preserver no solo la lingua ma la istoria kultural ke representava.
Jewish Constantinople portrays Jewish life during the transition from the Ottoman Empire to the modern Republic of Turkey. It spans the two generations prior to the one depicted in Jewish İstanbul. The semi-biographical vignettes feature the Kohen, Benshoam, Levi and Romano family ancestors. The book includes photographs from the Kohen family archives. These were the last generations to grow up speaking Judeo-Spanish. They strove to preserve their native tongue until the changes brought by the two World Wars overwhelmed their efforts. Through the passionate retelling of the previous generation’s stories and the use of colorful Judeo-Spanish proverbs, they sought to preserve not only the language but the cultural history it embodied.

This is the apartment I grew up in and wrote a memoir about.
I lived on the second floor left side till 1968.
It collapsed 13 years ago on May 28, 2000 and made
the news because it was a historical building,
it made the news .
I had videotaped the building in 1992 and my friend
Albert Habip edited the clip and added the
lovely music, making the video palatable.
